Q: Do I really need to purchase the Fifth edition materials? Why can’t I continue using the Fourth edition?

Providing ServSafe students with the best opportunity to successfully acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to serve food safely and protect the general public from foodborne illness comes with the current information.

Offering training materials and a nationally accredited ANSI-CFP certification exam that stay current with the most recent FDA Food Code is our promise to our customers

Updating our training materials every two years with each FDA Food Code or supplement release helps provide students with the most current food safety information they need to know to prepare for an ANSI-CFP accredited exam and successfully perform on their job.

We are committed to developing training materials that help to make the content easier to read, digest, retain and apply on the job. Both the ServSafe Essentials book and supporting Instructor materials were redesigned for the Fifth Edition to serve the needs of the changing workplace including a more diverse workplace, varied foodservice experience, tighter labor markets and tighter training schedules. The Fifth Edition helps to deliver training more effectively and efficiently than before.

Please keep in mind that the Fourth Edition textbooks will no longer be available for sale after March 3, 2008. We will have a limited supply to help round out classes, but only while supplies last.

We strongly encourage all instructors to commit to teaching our foodservice managers the most current information which is now found in ServSafe Fifth Edition.

 
 
Q: For how long can I purchase ServSafe Fourth Edition materials?

ServSafe Fourth edition textbooks and Instructor materials in English will be available until March 3rd. For all other products, please refer to the Fifth Edition availability schedule on page 1. Fourth Edition materials are sold up to the day that the fifth edition products are released.

A small quantity will be available until supplies last to help “round out” classes for those only needing a handful of books. In other words, if you have 12 students attending a class, but only 10 books on hand, you can purchase an additional 2 books to round out your class. Please call Customer Service at (800)765-2122, ext. 701 for assistance.

 
 
Q: Can I return ServSafe Fourth Edition materials?

Our normal return policy applies. Returns are only allowed within 30 days from the date of the invoice. You must call our Customer Service Department for a return authorization number before you ship your product back to us. Online courses and exams are not returnable.

 
 
Q. I just purchased Fourth Edition materials. What can I do?
 
If the purchase was within 30 days

If your purchase was within 30 days, the normal return policy applies. Products returns must be made within 30 days from the date of invoice. Call National Restaurant Association Solution’s Customer Service before you ship the product. All returned materials must have a Return Authorization Number assigned by NRA Solution’s Customer Service Department BEFORE they’re shipped back to us. Q: What is new in the ServSafe Essentials, Fifth Edition?
 

The new ServSafe Essentials, Fifth Edition has been redesigned and is ideal for one- or two-day classroom instruction and certification. Q. Is the ServSafe Essentials, Fifth Edition, shorter than the Fourth Edition?

Yes. The book is almost 100 pages less than the Fourth Edition. This resulted from changes in the JTA as well as applying a design that helped to reduce repetition without removing any essential content. 

One example is the temperature receiving criteria for receiving food in Chapter 6. To better align with the JTA and the FDA Food code, a manager now only needs to know the temperature receiving criteria for food in general terms, rather than specific types of food. Another reduction was the result of removing the Take-it-Back sections that appear at the end of each chapter. These are available for free to download at the Food Safety Resource Center on www.ServSafe.com.

Q. Do you still sell the ServSafe Instructor Basic CD-ROM / Power Point Presentation?

No, the English version of the Basic CD-ROM has been discontinued. This product previously included only the PowerPoint Presentation and Food Safety Showdown! Game. With the new teaching method using either video-based or activity-based Leader’s Guide, there is no longer a full PowerPoint available to cover 100% of the topics in the course. An instructor needs all the components, which are available on the Deluxe CD-ROM, to deliver ServSafe training.

 
Q: Will there be a list of updates and changes to help instructors manage the transition to the new edition?
 Yes. The list of all of the content updates reflected in the ServSafe Fifth Edition is currently being developed. It will be available on the ServSafe Instructor Deluxe CD-ROM and free to download in the Instructor Resource Center on www.ServSafe.com after 2/19/08.


VIDEOS
 

Q. I just bought videos this past year? Can I use them with the Fifth Edition?

Yes. The ServSafe videos released in June 2007 were created with the foresight of the Fifth Edition. The new Video-Based Leader’s Guide was built using the current videos.

There will be minor content edits made to the videos later in 2008 to better align them with the new food code and the JTA. We will communicate these specific changes at a later date.

 

EXAMS, ANSWER SHEETS AND CERTIFICATES

 
Q: Are there any changes to the exam? And when will they take effect?

The ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam will be updated to reflect the new ServSafe job task analysis (JTA) as well as the 2007 Supplement to the 2005 FDA Food Code on April 1, 2008.

 
 
Q: Will the exam be updated in all languages and in an online format?

Yes. Effective April 1, 2008, our written exam will be updated and available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and French Canadian. The online format is available in English, Spanish and Chinese.

 
 
Q: Are the answer sheets changing?

No. The answer sheet is not materially changing and can continue to be used.

 
 
Q: Will there be any changes to the ServSafe Certificate?

No design changes are being made at this time. Any changes are minimal and business related.

 
 
 
Q: What is a JTA?

The Job Task Analysis is the foundation upon which the ServSafe program is built.  A committee of food safety professionals representing foodservice, regulatory and academic interests develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by today’s person-in-charge in foodservice operations to serve food safely.  Industry users and food safety experts validate the tasks created by the committee to ensure they represent what the person-in-charge needs to know to serve food safely and protect the public from foodborne illness.

Q: Do you offer any products for the visually impaired?

Yes! We have worked with the Cleveland Sight Center since 1999 who makes ServSafe books available for the visually impaired. We are currently in the process of working with them to translate the Fifth Edition books.  As of right now, the ServSafe Fourth Edition is available on cassette tape and can be purchased directly from the Cleveland Sight Center

Textbooks for the visually impaired:
